The topic that I chose to focus on is the ways to engage ELL families and their children into school life. I chose this one because I am working with a large population of ELL students and their families. I have seen some really good practices of engaging those families and their children into school life, and the progress that ELL students make when they are fully engaged in school activities.
As I am interested in helping ELL families and their children, so I chose a general topic about implementing diversity into curriculum, and later on I came up with three subtopics. Among the three subtopics I preferred to have a research on the ways of engaging ELL families and their children into school life, as I believe it is one of the major issues that many schools are facing at the moment. I read some articles about this subtopic, and I used the way that I learned in week 1, which helped me save a large amount of time and understand the articles better. When I was constructing my research chart, I had an idea of the contents of different parts in an article. I also knows the various ways of doing research as well. I wrote a literature review about the three articles that I read this week about ELL families and they ways to engage them. I have gained some really new ideas that I did not know before.
This is my first time to do a real research on a certain topic, and I chose the topic by myself. I used the Walden Library to help me find some really good articles about my topic, but I still wonder if someone could help me find some more articles, journals or speeches about this topic. In that way, I can gather more information to understand my topic better.
Sissi,
ReplyDeleteI look forward to hearing additional practices of engaging those families and their children into school life, and the progress that ELL students make when they are fully engaged in school activities through your research project. Great choice!
Good luck with your research simulation. It sounds like you have a good start. If I come across any quality articles, I will certainly pass them your direction. Good luck moving forward.
Dear Sissi,
ReplyDeleteThat is an excellent topic! Since I explored language diversity and supporting ELL students & families in EDUC 6162 I found a few great resources on the Walden Library. Here are two articles I used and really enjoyed on this topic. You can also go to list of references to find even more resources.

All the best on the journey of research simulation!

Hi Sissi,
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in this topic as well because diversity is one main issue at the international schools. However I didn't choose this because I have experienced more parents questioning about our philosophy about play and how play can help their children in learning and development, so I chose play as my research topic but I will keep an eye on your research and hopefully I can also gain some valuable knowledge from you.

Hi Sissi! I'm very interested in reading more about your research topic, because it's an area that's relatively new to me. I currently read with children who speak multiple languages, and I'm learning the challenges first hand. However, I received so much conflicting information on best practices that I'm anxious to learn from your research!
ReplyDeleteI do not know if you've checked already, but the NAEYC website has quite a bit of information on ELL, and you won't believe this... but for one of our up-coming papers, I looked through an Australia website (compatable to our NAEYC), and I ended up copying a lot of research articles. This might be helpful to you also!
Good luck on this journey, Sissi; I cannot wait to read your findings!
Sissi- I look forward to what you find through this study- ELL students almost have to work 2 times as hard. Learning English and maintaining their native language.
ReplyDeleteYou raise a good point about not only using the university library, but other /outside data bases to find information. Of course, the university's site is a good place to start. Good Luck to you!
Hi Sissi,
ReplyDeleteGreat topic, I look forward to reading about ELL students and learning ways to engage familes and the children into school life.
Thanks for sharing your resources!!
