If I had the means and the knowledge...

If I had the means and knowledge, I would have a study and research on the importance of emotional development in early childhood. I believe children have to have a balanced development in their life to keep themselves competent. Many families only care about the cognitive development of their children, and they do not pay enough attention to their children’s emotional development. The consequences for that is those children will probably have a better academic performance at the beginning than other children, but in a long term, the children who have better social skills will do better. Therefore, my research will benefit families and their children in the following ways. First of all, I would like to draw a time line for parents to know golden time of emotional development in their children’s first years. Then, I would like to give some information of different strategies and methods to parents, so they can support their children’s emotional development. Third, I would like to address some problems that most families will have during their children’s emotional development, and to highlight some solutions to those problems. Last but not the least, I will give out some examples and some data about the importance of emotional development in a child’s life to help parents and schools realize the significance of emotional development in their parenting and teaching.

  1. Sissi,
My research simulation is about social development during preschool years. I like the ideas that you presented in your blog to raise parent’s awareness on the importance of emotional development. Many families are very concerned about their child’s academic success that they often times overlook the importance of emotional development as well. Great post!

  2. Sissi, what a wonderful research topic! Without a doubt, I agree that parents are, now more than ever, concerned about their child's cognitive skills. They want to be certain they are prepared for kindergarten. These parents (all parents) need to understand the importance of building a child's social skills... and the unbelieveable impact they can have by demonstrating positive social interactions with their own children. Thanks for sharing; as always, I enjoyed reading your blog!

  3. Sissi, I like your thoughts about the importance of emotional development for children. Honestly, for a lot of Asian families, they are more concerned about their children's academic performance as you mentioned, letting go of the important social skills that their children should acquire in their early years. However, when it's time for children to learn how to make friends, to negotiate, to solve conflicts, their parents take these learning opportunities from them and ask them to go read a book, or practice letters, or do some calculations, because they ignore the importance of social relations. I believe that social development is more important than any other developments at children's early years. Thank you for sharing.

  4. Emotional development is something that I would love to learn more about. In working with children there is a huge gap between those who are extremely emotional and those who are not. I think this type of research will benefit both teachers and parents. I am glad that you would be willing to take the time to help us understand how to deal with and/or trigger certain emotions from children.
